Emerging Tech: Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems, encompassing machine learning and natural language processing, learning from data and making decisions with minimal intervention
What is it?
Artificial Intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by computer systems. It encompasses machine learning and natural language processing, using algorithmic reasoning and deep learning to make decisions with minimal human intervention. Artificial Intelligence has the potential to be the greatest tool in aiding humans in almost all endeavors.
How does it fit with a software engineering career?
Major employers like Cisco, Google, and Microsoft are integrating AI into every platform or role. Engineers who understand AI concepts, even without being Machine Learning specialists, are significantly more competitive. AI familiarity is increasingly becoming a key step above competition in the modern job market.
How is it used?
- Healthcare — disease diagnosis, drug discovery, personalized treatment
- Finance — fraud detection, algorithmic trading, sanctions screening
- Cybersecurity — threat detection, runtime security
- Software Engineering — code generation, automated testing, debugging assistance
- Transportation — autonomous vehicles, 3D perception systems
- Business — chatbots, predictive analytics, process automation
Why is it relevant to my education/career?
Computer Science curricula are increasingly incorporating AI coursework. Understanding AI prepares students for roles in full stack development, data engineering, and systems programming—preparing me for a wide range of career tracks in the tech industry.
